Tanzania's appeal is the huge amount on offer both culturally and diving - be it tropical islands, climbing the highest mountain in Africa, diving the marine treasures or watching animal migration of plains game… Here at Planet we endeavour to provide impartial advice on all our destinations and enjoy constructing tailor made itineraries to suite your exact requirements. This is especially important in Tanzania, as there is such a wide choice of activities both above and below the water.

THE CLIMATE

Tanzania experiences ideal holiday weather for most of the year, with the exception of April, May and June which are seasonally subject to the long rains. Short rains can occur in November, but, do not last long. The heat of summer is seasonally often cooled by windy conditions, resulting in pleasant sea breezes, particularly on the north and east coasts. Being near to the equator, the islands are warm all year round, but officially summer and winter peak in December and June respectively. Best times to visit are July through October; December through March. The best months to see manta rays are from December to February.

THE DIVING

The diving in Tanzania is generally fairly easy (except for Pemba Islands) and so accessible to all levels. This destination is best suited to those looking for an adventurous holiday, is stunningly beautiful setting, with some very nice easy diving.

THE RESORT

The dive resorts in Tanzania are island based (Pemba, Zanzibar and Mafia island). All of the resorts are stunning; world class white sands beaches, turquoise crystal clear water and beautiful top class hotels. As some of our staff have lived and worked extensively in this area we would suggest calling to chat through your options and so we can point you in the right direction of which resort to consider.

THE ACCOMMODATION

The standard of accommodation is very high on the any of the three islands that we feature. We also offer a liveaboard programme around Pemba Island which will give you access to the best diving. A combination of the liveaboard and islands stay makes for a superb holiday.

There is so much on offer in Tanzania in the way of activities it is difficult to know where to start ! From mountain trekking to wildlife safaris; hot air ballooning over the Serengeti to visiting ancient ruins…

THE NIGHTLIFE

There is no real nightlife in the European sense of the word but the evening can certainly be lively with resort beach bars and live bands (in Zanzibar). It really depends on the island you have chosen for your holiday…

THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

All visitors entering Tanzania are required to have a valid passport and Visa. Visas can be obtained from the Tanzania Diplomatic Mission Abroad or alternatively at the point of entry. Visas cost for UK passport holders is $50 on arrival, other nationalities should check with the Tanzanian embassy.

THE HEALTH REQUIREMENTS

Certificates of inoculation against yellow fever and cholera are required only from visitors arriving from countries where these diseases are endemic. Malaria is a common illness in Tanzania and as a precaution anti-malarial prophylactics should be taken. Mosquito nets are provided in almost all hotel rooms. For headaches, colds and similar body ailments medication can be bought from anywhere within the country. When travelling to remote areas medication must be carried. To prevent a sunstroke spoiling a trekking expedition or beach fun have a sunscreen lotion and protective headgear handy. Protective clothing and footwear is also important.
