Diving Holidays To Mauritius

Mauritius, in the Indian Ocean, has a lot to offer as a dive destination. With direct flights from the UK and only a 3 hour time difference, it is very accessible. We would not classify Mauritius as a world-class dive destination such as the Maldives, Malaysia or the Pacific Islands but it is a superb holiday destination with some very nice diving for both beginner and more experienced divers.

A diving holiday to Mauritius is best suited to families or couples looking for an affordable luxury dive holiday in the Indian Ocean. We highly recommend combining your stay with a visit to some of the other islands, such as Rodriquez or Reunion. Planet Dive can easily combine a dive holiay to Mauritius with South Africa, Dubai or East Africa.

Diving In Mauritius

The sheltered northern and north-western coast offers the best diving in Mauritius. You are able to dive all year round with the prime diving period between October to May. The diving and marine life here will be familiar to divers who have visited other Indian Ocean dive destinations. There are some good wreck dives here, including the Hassen Mian in Balaclava, the Stella Maru in Trou aux Biches, and the Silver Star in Grand BaieAlmost all of the hotels here have dive centres attached to them.

In the south-west there is a good chance of seeing some of the larger pelagics, such as reef sharks and even bull sharks during some of the faster drift dives.

There is a also a marine park very close to the airport on the southeast side which is perfect if you are looking for a luxury hotel with some really good reef diving close by and a short transfer!

Diving Seasons In Mauritius

The best time period to dive Mauritius is during their summer from November to May (the opposite to our summer) when the prevalent strong winder winds have subsided and the air temperature is a palatable 28°C.

Being the Indian Ocean the water is lovely and warm so most divers just use a 3mm shortie or 3/2 long suit as a maximum.

Water temperatures range between 22°C in winter (5mm wetsuit) to 28°C in summer (3mm wetsuit). Average visibility is 20 to 25 metres.
