Tour Highlights

This 8-night self-drive tour offers you the opportunity to travel and explore at your own leisure, from the city of Cape Town through the garden route from where you will fly back to Cape Town. On your journey, you will have time to whale watch in Hermanus before continuing your journey onto the seaside towns of Wilderness, Knysna, and Plettenberg Bay, beautifully surrounded by lush forests, clear lakes and great beaches.

Days 1 - 3

5* Hermanus Harbour House Hotel

Bed & Breakfast

This morning, you will leave Cape Town and travel onto Hermanus. Enjoy whale watching in Hermanus from a boat or from the cliffs where panoramic ocean views abound. Spend the two days getting to know this quaint town, its vast natural beauty, amazing wine route and great eateries.

Hermanus

Hermanus is one of South Africa’s most refined coastal escapes, making it an ideal 1–2 night stop within a luxury touring itinerary. It combines dramatic ocean scenery with a relaxed, upmarket seaside atmosphere, and is widely regarded as one of the best places in the world for land-based whale watching.

The town sits on the edge of Walker Bay, where sheer cliffs drop straight into the ocean, creating a spectacular natural setting. A stay here is less about ticking off sights and more about slowing the pace, enjoying the views, and soaking up the coastal lifestyle.

For a short visit, the experience centres around the famous cliff path, which runs for several kilometres along the coastline directly above the sea. This is perfect for gentle walks, with constantly changing views and, in season from around June to November, frequent sightings of Southern Right whales just offshore.

The town itself has an unpretentious feel, with a good selection of independent boutiques, galleries and excellent restaurants. Dining is a highlight, particularly seafood, with many venues offering uninterrupted ocean views. It works very well for a relaxed afternoon followed by a long, unhurried dinner.

The Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, just inland, is one of South Africa’s top wine regions, known for its cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and offers a number of high-quality estates for tastings and lunch. Boat-based whale watching trips operate in season, and there are also options for kayaking, coastal drives and scenic flights.

Hermanus fits naturally into a Garden Route or Western Cape itinerary. The drive from Cape Town takes around 1.5 to 2 hours and is particularly scenic if you follow the coastal route via False Bay. From here, you can continue east towards the Garden Route, making it a seamless and highly rewarding stop.

Days 3 - 5

4* Wilderness Views Boutique Hotel

Bed & Breakfast

After breakfast, continue onto Wilderness. This quaint town provides the perfect introduction to the exquisite coastal area known as the Garden Route. Running through the town, the Kaaimans River, provides the perfect playground for outdoor enthusiasts who will love the kayaking, hiking, abseiling and kloofing opportunities afforded here.

Garden Route

Days 5 - 7

4* The Lofts Hotel Knysna

Bed & Breakfast

Continue your journey towards Knysna. The famous Knysna Lagoon, with its bustling waterfront, offers a myriad of activities to enjoy. Spend your next days exploring this beautiful, stretch of the Garden Route on your bicycle or by foot or on the water with a kayak or stand up paddleboard. You can also enjoy a whale watching trip or sunset cruise out through the Knysna heads.

Garden Route

Days 7 - 9

5* Plettenberg Bay The Old Rectory

After breakfast, depart Knysna and head towards Plettenberg Bay, your final stop on the beautiful Garden Route. Visit one of the animal and birdlife sanctuaries in the area or enjoy a ziplining adventure through Tsitsikamma National Park. The beaches around Plettenberg Bay are simply stunning and you will find it a struggle to tear yourself away from these long stretches of unspoilt beauty.

After your last two nights in Plett you will enjoy an internal flight back to Cape Town or Johannesburg.
