Tour Highlights

Discover the diverse natural and cultural highlights of northern Oman on this incredible eight-day tour with a private driver-guide.

After exploring the palaces, mosques and museums of Muscat, you'll enjoy a breathtaking drive along Oman's spectacular gulf coast to see the turtle-nesting beaches of Ras Al Jinz. You’ll also discover pretty mountain villages, vast sand dunes, terraced fruit orchards, the 1000-metre-deep Wadi Nakhr Gorge, known as Oman’s 'grand canyon', and the forts and markets around Oman's ancient capital, Nizwa.

Days 1 - 6

5* Jumeirah Muscat Bay

Breakfast & Bed

On arrival at Muscat airport, you’ll be met by our agent and transferred to your chosen hotel in Muscat Bay, set in the stunning Bandar Jissah coastal bay. This is one of the best locations to access a wide range of dive sites in the region, including extended trips to the Damaniyat Islands.

Muscat Region

Muscat, the capital of Oman, is a large coastal city flanked by some truly stunning mountain scenery and beautiful pristine coastline. With daily direct flights from London, and many other European international airports, this region is especially suitable for families who prefer easy travel. Oman is also a very safe, moderate and friendly country, a top consideration for many travelers.

There are broadly three options for a scuba diving holiday in the Muscat region of Oman. Stay close to the Muscat where you will find some beautiful new elegant luxury hotels, both family-friendly properties, and tranquil elegant retreats. Head a little South to the Sifah area for some beautiful scenery and a great value boutique hotel. Head a little North to Mussanah for a great value beach resort and superb watersports.

For the scuba diving, probably the very best diving in the whole of Oman is at the Daymaniyat Islands, just 45 minutes by fast boat from some of the Muscat properties, as well as Mussanah. Whale Sharks can be seen on most dive trips to these islands from September to November!

To get the most out of a visit to Oman we strongly recommend combining your beach stay with a visit to some of the interior of the country, perhaps to one of the luxury mountain retreats, or even to a desert camp. Planet Dive Holidays have a huge amount of experience and knowledge regarding travel and scuba diving in Oman, and have personally checked all of the properties we offer. In the first instance, we would suggest calling and speaking to an Oman luxury travel expert.

Days 6 - 7

4* Ras al Jinz Turtle Reserve

Breakfast

Today, you’ll depart for Wasabi Sands, via Tiwi with an overnight stay at Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve. Your 4WD will drive along the scenic and rugged coastal route, passing the fishing village of Quriyat. Your first stop is the Bimah sinkhole, a spectacular limestone crater with blue-green water at the bottom. Another stop is at a white-sand beach where you can swim and then on to the dense green plantations of Tiwi. As the trip continues, you’ll notice the road winds through mountain terrain and the ancient port town of Sur, to Ras Al Jinz, a sanctuary for green turtles. Have a nice dinner at the Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve. There is a short distance to the beach, where you can watch turtles nesting on the sands.

Ras al Jinz Turtle Reserve

Ras al Jinz Turtle Reserve, located on the easternmost tip of the Arabian Peninsula in Oman, is a renowned sanctuary for green sea turtles. This protected area is one of the most important nesting sites for these turtles in the Indian Ocean, drawing visitors from around the world to witness the extraordinary spectacle of sea turtle nesting and hatching. The reserve's pristine beaches serve as a vital habitat where thousands of turtles come ashore each year to lay their eggs, continuing a cycle of life that has existed for millennia.
The experience of visiting Ras al Jinz is both educational and awe-inspiring. Guided nighttime tours offer a rare opportunity to observe turtles in their natural habitat, as they laboriously dig nests and lay their eggs under the cover of darkness. During the hatching season, visitors may also witness the heartwarming sight of tiny hatchlings emerging from the sand and making their perilous journey to the sea.

In addition to its ecological importance, the reserve features a visitor center with exhibits that provide insight into the life cycle of turtles and the conservation efforts in place to protect them. The surrounding area, with its rugged coastline and tranquil atmosphere, offers a sense of connection to nature that complements the unique wildlife experience. Ras al Jinz Turtle Reserve is not just a destination; it is a testament to the importance of preserving fragile ecosystems and respecting the natural world.

Days 7 - 9

4* Canvas Club

Full Board

After breakfast, drive past small fishing villages to Al Ashkarah town, leave the coast and head inland, where the rocky scrubland soon gives way to sand dunes. After stopping to view the 52-domed mosque at Jalan Bani Bu Ali, keep driving to Wadi Bani Khalid to see its pretty villages embedded in the mountains. Before venturing deeper into the desert, swim in the deep blue-green waters.

Spend 2 unforgettable nights in your private traditional Bedouin tent deep in the desert of Oman. Marvel at the crystal clear starry skies, relish the unique tranquility of the desert, silence, get enchanted by the beauty of the desert, and leave your daily grind far behind.

Wahiba Sands

Wahiba Sands, also known as Sharqiya Sands, is a vast expanse of golden desert in Oman, celebrated for its breathtaking beauty and unique natural environment. Spanning over 12,000 square kilometers, the landscape is characterized by rolling dunes that shift in color from deep orange to pale gold under the changing light of the sun. These towering dunes, some reaching heights of over 100 meters, are shaped by the winds and create an ever-changing spectacle of natural artistry.

The area is not just a visual marvel; it also harbors a surprisingly rich ecosystem. Despite the arid conditions, the desert is home to a variety of flora and fauna, as well as nomadic Bedouin tribes who have adapted to its harsh environment. Visitors often remark on the tranquil solitude of the sands, which offer opportunities for activities like camel trekking, dune bashing, and stargazing. The night sky, unspoiled by light pollution, reveals a dazzling array of stars, making it a favorite spot for astronomy enthusiasts.

Wahiba Sands is not only a destination for adventure but also a place to experience Oman's rich cultural heritage. Traditional Bedouin camps provide a glimpse into the lives of the people who have thrived here for centuries, offering warm hospitality, storytelling, and authentic Omani cuisine. The desert's mystique, combined with its serene beauty and cultural significance, leaves a lasting impression on everyone who visits.

Days 9 - 12

5* Alila Jabal Akhdar

Half Board

Next and last stop is the stunning Al Jabal Mountains range for 3 days of exploring, trekking and just enjoying a stunning luxury spa retreat set on top of one of the highest peaks. The 3/4 hour drive from Wahabi Sands will route via the historical town if Nizwa, the gateway to the Al Jabal mountains. Here you will have time to explore the many forts and castles.

Nizwa and Jabal Akhdar

Nizwa is known for its 17th century round tower fort, and the souq with its ornamental silver jewellery, Friday cattle auction and intricately hand-carved khanjar daggers. A few kilometers outside Nizwa, you'll visit the historic fort town of Bahla which is famous for pottery. This town is encircled by a 12km winding wall and now it is included on UNESCO's World Heritage list. A short distance beyond, the castle of Jabreen, also built in the 17th century and a seat of Omani learning, displays the finest examples of Islamic architecture with beautifully executed woodcarvings and exquisite ceiling paintings.

Jabal Akhdar, meaning "Green Mountain" in Arabic, is a stunning highland region in Oman's Al Hajar Mountains, known for its cool climate and lush terraced farms. Rising over 2,000 meters above sea level, it offers breathtaking views of rugged peaks, dramatic canyons, and traditional villages. Renowned for its pomegranate orchards, rose gardens, and hiking trails, Jabal Akhdar combines natural beauty with a serene atmosphere, making it a popular destination for nature lovers and those seeking a tranquil retreat.
