Tour Highlights

This 5-night tour in Sri Lanka can be bolted on to a stay in The Maldives or as part of an extended tour in Sri Lanka.

Begin at the 5th-century rock fortress of Sigiriya, often described as the eighth wonder of the world, before visiting the giant recumbent Buddhas of Polonnurawa, and exploring Kandy, the country's cultural core.

Days 1 - 3

5* Jetwing Vil Uyana

Bed & Breakfast

Arrive in Sri Lanka and transfer to the Jetwing Vil Uyana near the spectacular rock fortress of Sigiriya. Spend the rest of the day at leisure.

After breakfast, climb UNESCO-listed Sigiriya Rock, a citadel of unusual beauty rising 200m from the scrub jungle. In the afternoon, visit Polonnaruwa, the second capital of Sri Lanka, also honoured by UNESCO.

Sigiriya

Sigiriya Rock, part of Sri Lanka's famed Cultural Triangle, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its historical, archaeological, and architectural significance. Often referred to as the "Lion Rock," Sigiriya is an ancient rock fortress that rises nearly 200 meters above the surrounding plains. It was built in the 5th century AD by King Kashyapa, who transformed it into a royal palace, citadel, and garden complex.

The site features a series of terraced gardens, water gardens, and boulder gardens, considered masterpieces of ancient landscape design. Midway up the rock, the Mirror Wall, once polished to reflect the king’s image, is adorned with ancient graffiti and poems left by visitors from centuries past. Nearby, the Sigiriya frescoes depict celestial maidens, or "Apsaras," painted with vibrant pigments that have endured for millennia.

At the summit of the rock, the ruins of the king’s palace offer panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Sigiriya is often viewed as the pinnacle of Sri Lankan engineering, blending art, urban planning, and natural beauty.

The broader Cultural Triangle includes nearby ancient cities like Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, as well as the Dambulla Cave Temples. Together, these sites offer a glimpse into Sri Lanka's rich history, culture, and Buddhist heritage. Sigiriya stands out as an iconic landmark, combining natural grandeur with human ingenuity.

Days 3 - 5

4* The Kandy House

Bed & Breakfast

This morning you will head to Kandy via 1st century Dambulla rock temples. It's hard to know what to admire most, the complex of five painted caves, the giant rock Buddha that stands at the entrance, or the lines of devotees who come to place offerings in a haze of insence.

In the afternoon you'll continue to Matale where you'll visit a spice garden where you'll learn more about Sri Lanka's famed spice industry. From there you'll head to Kandy, Sri Lanka's cultural capital.

Kandy

Kandy, often referred to as the cultural capital of Sri Lanka, is a city steeped in history, spirituality, and natural beauty. Nestled amidst lush hills and surrounded by the tranquil waters of Kandy Lake, it is a place where tradition meets serene landscapes. At its heart lies the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, a revered Buddhist site that houses a tooth of the Buddha, drawing pilgrims and visitors worldwide. The temple complex is a masterpiece of architecture and a symbol of Sri Lanka’s spiritual heritage.

Exploring Kandy, visitors can wander through the vibrant streets and discover bustling markets, charming colonial-era buildings, and local crafts, especially the region’s famous gemstones and intricate handloom textiles. A visit to the Royal Botanical Gardens in nearby Peradeniya offers a peaceful retreat with its expansive collection of tropical flora, including giant bamboo groves and the famous orchid house.

For those seeking cultural immersion, Kandy is home to traditional dance performances that showcase the island’s rich artistic heritage. A journey into the surrounding hills reveals picturesque tea plantations, where visitors can learn about Sri Lanka’s tea production and enjoy panoramic views of the lush landscapes.

Kandy’s unique blend of history, religion, and natural splendor makes it an unforgettable destination, offering a deep connection to Sri Lanka's cultural and spiritual essence.

Days 5 - 6

4* The Residence by Uga

Bed & Breakfast

Today you will hear back to the capital, around 3 hours from Kandy, and stay at the beautiful Residence Hotel close to the city centre.

Colombo

Colombo, Sri Lanka's bustling capital, is a vibrant blend of modernity and tradition, offering a dynamic experience for visitors on a short trip. The city’s iconic landmarks, such as the Lotus Tower and the colonial-era Old Parliament Building, showcase its mix of contemporary and historical charm. The bustling streets of Pettah Market are perfect for exploring local culture, offering a sensory overload of sights, sounds, and flavours.

A stroll along Galle Face Green, a seaside promenade, offers a chance to enjoy the ocean breeze, sample street food, and watch the sunset. Nearby, the Colombo National Museum provides insights into the island's rich history and heritage. For a tranquil escape, the Gangaramaya Temple combines religious significance with eclectic architecture.

Its diverse culinary scene, featuring authentic Sri Lankan cuisine and international options, ensures a memorable gastronomic experience. Despite its fast-paced vibe, Colombo's mix of attractions makes it an engaging destination for a brief yet enriching visit.
