The Story Behind Waterlovers - Waterlovers Beach Resort was built from the ground up in 2007 by an adventurous Italian couple, who pursued their dream of creating an East African paradise. Over the years, the resort has become a trusted destination for travelers. In 2023, Nadia and Kirsten, frequent guests who had fallen in love with the property, took over ownership. Nadia, a journalist and documentary filmmaker, and Kirsten, managing director of a humanitarian-focused foundation, have both lived and worked in Kenya for over a decade. Their goal is to continue Waterlovers' tradition of delivering exceptional service and laid-back luxury, ensuring each guest leaves with unforgettable memories.
Location - Waterlovers is situated on Diani Beach, approximately 35 km south of Moi International Airport in Mombasa. The beach stretches across 25 kilometers of soft, white sand, framed by crystal-clear waters and coconut palm groves. The calm ocean waters extend 500 meters out to a vibrant coral reef, which is home to sea turtles, dolphins, and a variety of tropical fish. Bordering the beach is a lush green rainforest, rich in colorful birdlife and home to the rare Colobus monkey, a black-and-white species native to this region of East Africa. The nearby Shimba Hills nature reserve, located just a short drive inland, offers additional opportunities for exploring the natural beauty of the area. The resort's management is always available to assist guests with airport transfers and organizing local excursions through trusted operators.
Dining at Waterlovers - Waterlovers offers a unique dining experience, blending international flavors with the distinct ingredients of the coastal region. Tides Restaurant, located beside the infinity pool with stunning views of the ocean, creates an inviting atmosphere with its Greek-inspired architecture, featuring whitewashed arcades and African cedar wood beams. The menu, crafted with the freshest ingredients and prepared in the resort's state-of-the-art kitchen, includes homemade pasta, freshly baked bread, and an array of mouthwatering desserts. An à la carte menu is available, and the restaurant can accommodate special dietary requests or vegetarian meals upon request.
The resort’s beach bar, Ocean Spirit, provides the perfect spot for guests to unwind with cocktails, fresh fruit juices, or aperitifs while listening to good music and taking in the ocean views.
The Suites - Waterlovers’ eight spacious suites offer 50 square meters of luxury, each equipped with a private veranda overlooking the turtle-shaped pool and the ocean. The suites come with air conditioning, a fan, mosquito nets, a combination safe, complimentary Wi-Fi, and socket adapters. Both double and triple suites are available, and the interior design is a blend of Swahili culture and Mediterranean style. The term “Swahili” means “of the shore” and represents not only the language but also a rich cultural fusion of Africa, Arabia, and the East—this unique blend is reflected in every corner of the resort’s interior.
The Birds Villa - The Birds Villa offers two spacious double bedrooms on the ground floor, each with air conditioning, a fan, and a private bathroom. The upper floor is an open gallery, featuring two additional king-sized beds and a third bathroom. While the beds on the upper floor have mosquito nets, the open design means there is no air conditioning, allowing guests to feel the natural elements around them. The villa also boasts a charming porch area with comfortable seating, a beautifully carved wooden dining table, and Swahili-style beds that evoke the exotic atmosphere of Africa. Housekeeping is included in the villa rental.
The Ocean Penthouse - For those seeking the ultimate in luxury, Waterlovers offers a 300-square-meter penthouse with breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean. Located directly on the beachfront, the penthouse is fully equipped with modern amenities, making it perfect for discerning guests. The first floor includes a kitchen, dining area, living room, two bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, and a veranda with oceanfront seating. The second floor features an open wooden deck with stunning ocean views, a king-size bed, and a small seating area. Another bedroom with air conditioning and a shared bathroom can also be found on this level. The entire penthouse provides 360-degree views of the beach, pool, and lush gardens.
The Kola Spa - Waterlovers also offers a cozy spa, Kola Spa, where guests can indulge in beauty treatments and massages designed to provide relaxation and rejuvenation. The spa offers the perfect retreat for those seeking to refresh their mind and body during their stay.
