The Sands At Nomad, in detail

Nomads Boutique Beach Resort

The Sands at Nomad is a boutique beachfront resort set on the southern coast of Kenya, along the famous Diani Beach. It combines barefoot luxury with a relaxed, natural atmosphere, making it best for couples, families, and travellers who want a stylish yet informal escape by the Indian Ocean. The feel of the place is warm and welcoming, with Swahili-inspired design, tropical gardens shaded by ancient coastal forest, and direct access to one of Africa’s most beautiful beaches. Highlights include its prime beach location, a choice of spacious suites and private cottages, a highly regarded dive centre, and dining that makes the most of fresh seafood and local produce.
Accommodation is varied, offering different categories for couples, honeymooners, and families, all designed in a fusion of Swahili, Arabic, and Indian Ocean style with natural wood, stone, and locally crafted details.
The Standard Cottages are set in the tropical gardens and are around 30 square metres in size. Each has either a king-size or twin beds, a bathroom with shower, and a private veranda. They are simple and comfortable, ideal for those who want an affordable stay close to the beach.
The Superior Cottages are larger, at around 40 square metres, and located nearer to the beach. They include a king-size bed under a mosquito net, a seating area, an en suite bathroom with a shower, and a shaded veranda.
The Ocean View Suites measure around 65 square metres and are positioned to overlook the beach and ocean. Each suite has a large bedroom with a king-size bed, a lounge area, an en suite bathroom with both a bathtub and a shower, and a spacious veranda with wide sea views.
The Beach Cottages are around 60 square metres and sit directly on the sand, with uninterrupted views of the ocean. They feature a king-size bed, a bathroom with both indoor and outdoor elements, and private terraces that open straight onto the beach.
The Nomad Superior Suites are among the largest accommodations at around 80 square metres. They include a master bedroom, a separate lounge, a large bathroom with a bathtub and a walk-in shower, and a wide veranda with views of either the ocean or gardens.
The Ocean View Family Suites are similar in size but designed with two bedrooms, making them ideal for families. They include a master suite, a second twin room, shared living space, and a balcony with views across the beach.
For those wanting more privacy, the Luxury Beachfront Villas offer direct access to the sand with private gardens and pools. These villas have spacious interiors with multiple bedrooms, open-plan living and dining areas, and private terraces. They are perfect for families or groups wanting their own space by the sea.
Facilities at The Sands at Nomad are designed to balance comfort and activity. The main swimming pool is set in the gardens and shaded by palms. The Nomad Beach Bar and Restaurant is the social hub, open all day and serving a mix of seafood, Mediterranean dishes, and African specialities. Other dining options include an Italian restaurant with fresh pasta and pizza, and regular beach barbecues. A wine cellar and sushi bar add to the variety.
The Forest Breeze Spa offers massages and treatments in an open-air setting among the trees. Yoga sessions are also held on the beach or in shaded garden areas. A small gym is available for guests who wish to train.
Water activities are a highlight. The resort has its own dive centre, offering PADI courses and trips to coral reefs along the coast. Snorkelling is excellent, and guests can also enjoy kayaking, windsurfing, paddleboarding, and kite surfing. Dhow sailing trips, dolphin watching, and deep-sea fishing can be arranged.
On land, guests can explore the coastal forest, go cycling, or take excursions to the nearby Shimba Hills National Reserve for wildlife viewing. Cultural visits to villages, markets, and historic sites in Mombasa can also be organised.
Evenings are relaxed, often centred on dining by the beach, cocktails at sunset, or live music at the bar. The atmosphere is friendly and sociable, yet never overcrowded.
The Sands at Nomad is at heart a stylish but laid-back resort where guests can enjoy one of Africa’s best beaches, excellent diving, and warm Kenyan hospitality. It suits couples looking for romance, families seeking both adventure and relaxation, and anyone who wants a boutique, characterful alternative to larger beach resorts.
