Soneva Fushi Resort, in detail

Soneva Fushi Resort

Soneva Fushi is one of the most iconic resorts in the Maldives, set on a large private island in the Baa Atoll. Unlike many smaller island resorts, it feels spacious, natural, and wild, with dense tropical forest, long stretches of untouched beach, and villas that are hidden away for complete privacy. The resort has a barefoot luxury philosophy, encouraging guests to go without shoes from the moment they arrive. It is best suited for couples, families, and anyone who values space, privacy, and world-class service combined with an eco-conscious ethos. Highlights include some of the largest villas in the Maldives, a famous outdoor cinema in the jungle, an observatory for stargazing, creative dining concepts, and superb access to snorkelling and diving with manta rays at Hanifaru Bay.
The accommodation is exceptionally spacious and designed to blend with the island’s natural environment. Most villas are crafted from sustainable wood and natural materials, with private pools, direct beach access, and large gardens. Each comes with bicycles for guests to explore the island and a dedicated “Mr or Ms Friday” butler for personalised service.
The one-bedroom Crusoe Villas measure around 260 square metres. They are two-storey beachfront villas with a king-size bed, open-air bathroom, private pool, and terraces overlooking the beach. They sleep two adults and are perfect for couples who want privacy and space.
The one-bedroom Soneva Fushi Villas are about 395 square metres. These villas also open directly onto the beach and feature large living areas, a private pool, and an expansive garden. They can accommodate two adults comfortably, with room for an extra child or guest on request.
The two-bedroom Crusoe Residences measure around 649 square metres. They are set directly on the sand and come with two en-suite bedrooms, spacious living and dining areas, and an outdoor bathroom with open-air showers. They include a private pool and ample garden space, making them ideal for families.
The larger Soneva Fushi Family Villas range between 634 and 700 square metres, with two bedrooms, multiple lounging areas, private pools, and beach gardens. They are designed for family stays with children, offering both privacy and communal spaces.
The three- and four-bedroom villas grow in size up to well over 1,500 square metres. These include large pools, outdoor lounges, and open-air bathrooms, as well as multiple terraces and private beach stretches. They are fully serviced with dedicated butlers, and many come with water slides that lead straight into the pool.
The Private Reserves are among the largest villas in the Maldives, some exceeding 5,000 square metres. These are lavish multi-bedroom residences with enormous pools, private gyms, spas, cinemas, kitchens, and staff quarters. They provide the highest level of luxury for families or groups, with total privacy hidden within the forest canopy and steps leading down to their own stretch of sand.
Facilities at Soneva Fushi are designed to be unique and imaginative. The resort has a wide choice of dining, from fine dining overwater to sandbank picnics and treetop restaurants reached by rope bridges. The highlight for many is “Fresh in the Garden”, an open-air restaurant set above the resort’s organic gardens, and “Out of the Blue”, a multi-level overwater dining hub with a variety of international kitchens. Wine cellars and chocolate rooms are part of the experience, with complimentary homemade ice creams and chocolates always available.
The spa offers a full range of wellness treatments, yoga, and meditation, often in outdoor treatment rooms that open onto the forest or the sea. There is also a gym, tennis courts, and a full range of water sports.
Diving and snorkelling are exceptional, with a professional dive centre and access to the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Baa Atoll. Hanifaru Bay, one of the world’s best places to see manta rays and whale sharks, is within reach. Guests can also enjoy guided snorkel safaris, freediving, and eco-tours with marine biologists.
For families, Soneva Fushi has one of the best children’s facilities in the Maldives. “The Den” is an enormous kids’ club with pools, water slides, music rooms, craft workshops, and even a Lego room. It is designed to be as exciting for children as the villas are for adults, allowing parents to relax while their children are entertained and cared for.
Unique experiences set Soneva Fushi apart. The open-air Cinema Paradiso screens films under the stars, with popcorn and cocktails. The island observatory lets guests stargaze through powerful telescopes with an expert astronomer. Sunset dolphin cruises, sandbank dinners, and glassblowing workshops are all part of the resort’s offering, giving it a sense of creativity and wonder beyond standard luxury.
Evenings are calm yet atmospheric, often centred around dining and conversation rather than loud entertainment. The resort emphasises peace, connection with nature, and sustainable living, with many eco-initiatives woven into its operations.
Soneva Fushi is a place for those who want the ultimate in privacy, space, and natural luxury. It is both romantic and family-friendly, offering extraordinary villas and unique experiences while maintaining a strong sense of environmental responsibility.
