Overview Of Azura Selous

Azura Selous is located on the banks of the Great Ruaha River, in a remote and spectacular part of the Selous Game Reserve in southern Tanzania. The Selous is Africa’s oldest and largest game reserve, a vast riverine wilderness which is home to some of Africa’s largest populations of lion, hippo, elephant, buffalo and the rare and endangered wild dog.

The area is particularly regarded for the exclusivity it offers, where you will often find it’s just you, your camera and the animals at a viewing. The Selous is all about an authentic safari experience, about getting back to basics and tracking the animals through this vast and beautiful piece of African Wilderness. The topography itself has much to offer, from riverbeds to plains to forests to lakes, plus a touch of history in the form of Frederick Courtney Selous. At some 4 times the size of the Serengeti, the Selous has a diverse habitat, with many and varied topographies and game and birdlife experiences, but with a fraction of the visitors you will find elsewhere.

Accommodation At Azura Selous

There are just 12 air-conditioned tented villas at Azura Selous, each well spread out along the banks of the river, ensuring an intimate and private safari experience. The villas are both spacious and luxurious, with fantastic vistas across to the hippos and wildlife that frequent the stretch of river where we are located.

Their unique design is part solid and part tented for that authentic bush feeling, with safari-chic décor, super kingsize or twin beds draped with the softest netting, termite mound shaped entrance halls with chandeliers, fully equipped bathrooms with indoor and outdoor showers, lounging decks with daybeds, and refreshing plunge pools overlooking the rapids of the Great Ruaha River.

Wining And Dining

Unlike most safari lodges Azura Selous do not group their guests together for meal times unless you specifically request to eat together. The concept here is that each meal time is a special occasion, it is a relaxed experience and a gourmet one, the camp offers a la carte dining and 3 course lunches and dinners. The aim is for guests to never eat in the same place twice.

At Azura, dining is all part of the experience, from breakfast in the bush to dining under the vast African skies by candle light. The hosts take huge pride in their innovative dining set-ups, and little touches to make your stay special. The menus are based on what is fresh and available, it’s a simple understated affair. At dinner they offer a choice of dishes and can cater for all dietary needs and requirements as long as there is notice due to our remote location.

Activities

Game Drives by Land Rover

All the game drives are in custom made Land Rover vehicles that have open sides and raised seating, ideal for comfortable game viewing and photography. The cars either hold 6 people or 4 people so the whole experience of coming to stay with us is a very intimate one. The Selous is wild, rugged and diverse, it is not a zoo and your game drives are varied and always take in new areas to discover. With your guide you will track what you are looking for, often following fresh footprints and often off roading looking for the normal tick list of game that people have come to find.

Guided Walking Safari

Walking safaris with expert guides are an incredible activity that is encourage for all guests to do. Accompanied by highly trained and professional guides, walking safaris offer guests the rare chance to get up-close and personal with the 'little five', as well as learn about the relationship between flora and fauna and the medicinal values of the plants that thrive in the reserve.
