The Manta Resort is a peaceful and secluded retreat on the remote north-west coast of Pemba Island, surrounded by untouched forest and the calm, clear waters of the Indian Ocean. It is best for couples, honeymooners, and travellers looking for natural beauty, privacy, and complete relaxation. The atmosphere is laid-back and friendly, with traditional island charm and thoughtful comfort. The setting is quiet and unspoilt, with pristine beaches, lush gardens, and one of the most unique features in Africa – a floating Underwater Room. The resort also offers some of the best diving and snorkelling in East Africa, along with warm local hospitality and a strong focus on conservation.
The Standard Garden Room is around 35 to 40 square metres. It has a king-sized four-poster bed, an open-plan en-suite bathroom with a walk-in shower, and a shaded veranda facing the gardens. It is naturally cooled by sea breezes and is surrounded by trees for a peaceful, private feel. It sleeps two adults.
The Superior Garden Room is about 45 square metres. It includes air-conditioning, a king-sized bed, an en-suite bathroom, and a private garden space with a Swahili-style seating area. It offers extra comfort while keeping the quiet, natural atmosphere. Two of these rooms are joined by a shared garden, making them suitable for families or groups. Each room sleeps two adults.
The Seafront Villa is approximately 60 square metres. It is set right by the ocean with uninterrupted sea views. Each villa has a king-sized bed, air-conditioning, a private plunge pool, and a large sun deck. The open-plan bathroom leads directly to an outdoor shower area. The villas offer complete privacy and sleep two adults.
The Seafront Family Villa has two double bedrooms with king-sized beds, each with its own bathroom and outdoor shower. A private garden and plunge pool sit between the rooms. It is designed for families or small groups and can sleep up to six guests using additional beds.
The Underwater Room is a three-level floating suite anchored in the ocean. The upper deck is for sunbathing and stargazing. The sea-level floor has a lounge and bathroom. The bedroom is four metres underwater and surrounded on all sides by glass, giving views into the coral reef. It is completely private, serviced by boat, and sleeps two adults. At night, soft underwater lights attract marine life, creating a magical experience.
The main lodge is built in an open style with sea views and cool breezes. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served on the dining terrace or at private tables on the beach or in the garden. The menu changes daily and includes seafood, local vegetables, tropical fruits, and international favourites with a Swahili twist. The beach bar serves cocktails, fresh juices, and cold drinks throughout the day.
The swimming pool sits in a quiet garden corner, surrounded by palm trees and flowering shrubs. It is a peaceful place to cool off and relax on a lounger with a drink or book.
The spa is built from natural stone and wood, with views of the ocean and forest. Guests can book massages, body treatments, and facials using local oils and natural products. Treatments can be enjoyed inside the spa or in shaded outdoor spaces.
The dive centre is fully certified and offers daily diving and snorkelling trips. The waters around Pemba are home to coral reefs, turtles, rays, reef sharks, and hundreds of tropical fish species. Visibility is excellent, and diving is available for both beginners and experienced divers. The house reef just offshore is perfect for snorkelling, and trips to Misali Island Marine Park are also available.
Guests can take dhow sailing trips, sunset cruises, kayaking excursions, or guided tours of nearby villages and spice farms. Nature walks, birdwatching, and island history tours are also offered. The Manta Resort supports local conservation through the Kwanini Foundation, and guests are welcome to learn about the work being done to protect the environment and support island communities.
There is a laundry service, housekeeping, and a private host assigned to each guest to assist with anything needed during the stay. Electricity is powered by solar panels, and the resort runs on strong eco-friendly principles to protect the surrounding nature.
The Manta Resort offers a simple, beautiful, and deeply relaxing island experience, where the rhythm of the sea and the warmth of local culture create a truly unforgettable stay.
