Sri Lanka has fast become one of the most popular holiday destinations and a visit to this exquisite country is a great add-on to a Maldives liveaboard or land-based diving trip. Last year tourist arrivals to the country increased by 16% and while many of the famous tourist attractions are getting busier we have found some great alternatives away from the crowds for those who seek a more intimate experience.

Mulkirigala Cave Temples instead of Dambulla Caves

Similar to the famous Dambulla Cave, Mulkirigala Cave Temples was built approximately 2,000 years ago and features caves full Buddha statues and frescoes. The Dutch called it Adam’s Berg and believed this to be the resting place of Adam and Eve. While Dambulla is a great stop en-route to the Cultural Triangle, Mulkirigala is a great option for those who want to enjoy a beach holiday in the south coast but still want the chance to experience the country’s rich history.

Wilpattu instead of Yala National Park

Wilpattu National Park is the biggest national park in Sri Lanka and, like its more popular cousin Yala, the park is home to leopards, elephants and sloth bears. The national park is located 37km from Anuradhapura and is on the way to the Cultural Triangle in the north making it an ideal stop for a bit of nature before immersing yourself in the country’s culture and history.

Yapahuwa instead of Sigirya Rock Fortress

Yapahuwa Rock Fortress, similar to the famous Sigiriya, comes complete with an inner and outer fortress, lion sculptures and ruins. Unlike Sigirya, Yapahuwa has remained largely unknown, which has enabled it to retain its authenticity and offer an unspoilt glimpse into medieval Sri Lankan history. The fortress sits on a much smaller rock with 315 steps when compared to Sigirya’s 1200 steps. It is a great option for families as well as both young and older couples.
