A week in the life of a luxury dive liveaboard in Oman

The incredible country of Oman offers pristine reefs along with stunning deserts, rugged mountain landscapes and endless beaches. It really is a great destination for a dive liveaboard trip, and the Oman Aggressor offers the opportunity to discover a sea full of fascinating marine life.

Here is the crew’s recount of the amazing trip in December:

Saturday, 2nd December

In the afternoon between 3pm – 4pm we welcome all guests aboard with a fresh squeezed fruit cocktail. Everyone is prepping their equipment, cameras and making themselves comfortable in the cabins. After a snack, cruise director Timo gives the general safety and boat briefing. We then enjoy a delicious dinner and tonight we are staying in the harbour until departure early on Sunday morning.

Sunday, December 3rd

We are ready for a wonderful day with four dives coming up. The weather is calm and our guests are curious about what they will encounter in the Oman waters. The diving safety and procedures briefing is done and we start with the checkout dive. A lot of marine life are seen during this dive including moray eels, different nudibranchs, and giant cuttlefish. For lunch we enjoy chicken fajitas with fresh guacamole before the third dive and final fourth dive (a night dive). For these dives we decide to head to ‘Hamdis Block’ where the mothership moors direct on the spot and we dive from the platform. On this dive a few divers are lucky and see a group of 15 eagle rays passing by! Then we start moving overnight to the Hallaniyat Islands.

Monday, December 4th

We arrive at Hasikiyah Island and ‘Coral Bay’ will be our first dive. Here there is a beautiful wall to drift on with healthy coral and plenty of fish all over including some pelagics. At the ‘Cave Site’ we spot a small turtle, an eagle ray and some groupers. For the fourth and the night dive we move to the other side of the island to our ‘Aquarium’. Today’s dinner will be salmon with lemon butter and pastry while Chef Salah prepares a chocolate marquise for dessert.

Tuesday, December 5th

Early morning at 2am we leave for Al Qibliyah Island where we will spend the day diving. The first dive will be around ‘Al Qibliyah Rock’. Here all guests enjoy good visibility and a marbled shrimp was spotted as well as some cute puffer fish. After lunch and a nap we do a dive from the platform at a site called ‘Canal Garden’. We see huge green turtles and a massive porcupine fish during the afternoon dive. The night dive is under the boat and everywhere are big red crabs as well as some little cuttlefish and an octopus. We are staying on the spot during the night and will move in the morning towards ‘Schmies’ Island’.

Wednesday, December 6th

The first dive this morning is ‘Schmies Fingers’ and we can dive from the platform. We enjoy a hot breakfast with hashbrowns and veal sausage before we head for our second dive at ‘Gotta Schmiess’. There is a little bit of current but an awesome site where we see lots of potato groupers and an eagle ray. As winds are forecasted for the night we decided to move to the south side of Al Sawda Island and on the way, we have our third dive at ‘Fish Highway’. Overnight we stay in a calm bay with some dramatic views of the island.

Thursday, December 7th

Winds calm down and we move to the other side of Al Sawda for the two morning dives. Under the platform we dive at ‘Al Sawda – Coral Garden’ and lovely batfish are awaiting the divers. ‘Al Farsha’ which means ‘carpet’ is a nice plateau just a quick ride with the tender away. Both dives are enjoyable with good visibility. During lunchtime we move back to Al Hasikiyah as we have a few requests to dive the ‘Aquarium’ again. For dinner, we enjoy a turkey feast and a glass of wine before watching the week’s trip recap movie. Now it’s time to move back to Mirbat where we will have our last two dives for the week.

Friday, December 8th

6:45 we ring the bell and the briefing for the ‘Marriott Wreck’ dive is held. The visibility is nice and our guests shoot great wide-angle pics. We then move a bit further for the last dive to ‘Ra’s Mirbat’ and as usual it offers one of the top dives during a trip with the Oman Aggressor. Now it’s time to have lunch and get a rest while we go back to the marina. At our cocktail party this evening, we enjoy reviewing the week and for dinner our guests enjoy a local selection of fish and seafood along with some quality wines at our recommended restaurant ‘AsSamak’ in the Marina.
