The Maldives has one of the most appealing and diverse coral reefs in the world. The waters surrounding the reefs are teeming with colour and marine life. However, with pollution and global warming on the rise, this has a major effect on the health of the reefs. For that reason, the International Coral Reef Initiative has declared 2018 as the third International Year of the Reef.
The ICRI International Year of the Reef 2018 is a worldwide campaign to raise awareness about the value and importance of coral reefs and threats to their sustainability, and to motivate people to take action to protect them.
This campaign aims to:
- Strengthen awareness globally about the value of, and threats to, coral reefs and associated ecosystems;
- Promote partnerships between governments, the private sector, academia and civil society on the management of coral reefs;
- Identify and implement effective management strategies for conservation, increased resiliency and sustainable use of these ecosystems and promoting best practices; and
- Share information on best practices in relation to sustainable coral reef management.
One of the leaders in reef conservation has always been the Carpe Diem Maldives group. They have now launched a new digital campaign to promote awareness towards the status of the Maldives coral reefs. They have invited recreational and professional divers to share their underwater images through Instagram and Facebook social media channels using the hashtags #maldivesreefawareness #carpediemmaldives and #IYOR2018 and include in the post information related to dive, date and depth on each image.
Divers visiting the different reefs across the Maldivian atolls will be able to show the real-time status of the reefs amidst the effects of global warming and will also be able to record the ongoing recovery and conservation efforts that are being carried out by organisations such as Coral Reef CPR and the Dive with a Purpose liveaboard cruise.
Join one of the Carpe Diem group’s cruises in the Maldives this year and enjoy the beauty of the Maldivian reefs and all the stunning marine life that surrounds them.
The Carpe Vita is a luxury liveaboard with a separate fully equipped diving dhoni. The cabins and facilities are spread over four decks, so even at the maximum capacity of 20 guests, there is plenty of space to enjoy the peace and serenity of the Indian Ocean.
The flagship Carpe Diem liveaboard is a luxurious cruiser that allows you to enjoy the beautiful Maldivian sun and sea. The liveaboard offers stunning cabins and has a smaller dhoni for getting to those perfect dive spots.
The Carpe Novo is the big sister of the Carpe Diem and Carpe Vita. This stunning liveaboard is more spacious and was built to an even higher specification than her sister ships. Like Carpe Diem there are three dives per day allowing guests the best diving that the Maldives has to offer.
If its an island paradise you would prefer then why not try the brand new Carpe Diem Resort that will be opening in June 2018. This idyllic resort has an activity-driven atmosphere and stunning accommodations set against the backdrop of a beautiful house reef and a crystal clear lagoon.
