However, despite this small size it enjoys a very big reputation on the global diving scene. And for very good reason. In fact, for many good reasons. And we’ve outlined just ten of them below.

# 1. Gozo (and its big sister Malta) were voted the second best diving destination in the world by Diver magazine readers in 2016. This also made it the top place to dive in Europe.

# 2. Waters are very clear around Gozo, with visibility of up to 30 metres and water temperatures of 28˚C in the summer months.

# 3. There is a big range of diving on offer in Gozo for all levels of diver, meaning it is a great place for a family break.

# 4. The underwater topography is also spectacular in Gozo. You can expect everything from calm bays to deep caverns and swim-throughs. There is also the world famous Blue Hole, which is an unforgettable dive into clear waters. Enjoy big drop-offs, grottos and generally stunning underwater scenery that’s all combined with plentiful marine life.

# 5. There are also three wreck sites in the waters at Xatt L’Ahmar, and around 80 dive sites in total in Gozo. So, you’ll never be short of a new site to explore. And with the island being relatively small and compact, it’s easy to get around to your choice of sites.

# 6. You can also travel further afield to the island of Comino. Even though it is small, there are several incredible dive sites including Santa Maria Point. Here you will find the Comino Caves, the place where the Conte of Monte Cristo hid his treasure in the literary work. There is also the wreck site of the P31 ex naval patrol vessel here.

# 7. Other top dive sites around the island include Cathedral Cave, with its huge vault where you can surface. Zurziep Reef is best dived in the afternoon light when you can take in the huge shoals of fish buzzing around. It’s also well worth a visit to Xlendi Bay Tunnel, a popular night time dive in shallow waters for experienced divers. The cave walls are brightly coloured with sponges, starfish and other marine life.

# 8. For a small island, Gozo also packs a punch out of the water. Visit a different town each night and enjoy meals out in traditional restaurants and fantastic wine bars.

# 9. There’s an excellent choice of high-end accommodation, with several five and four-star hotels including the Kempinski San Lawrenz and Ta Cenc.
