Learn to Dive
The most important consideration when learning to dive is safety, but running a close second is having fun.
Virtually anyone can learn to dive, so long as they're reasonably fit, in good health and comfortable in the water. If you just want to try diving you can discover scuba diving in the company of an instructor. Its not exclusively for adults either. Kids from 10 years old can Learn to Dive and from 8 they can try diving with a Bubblemaker experience.
An entry level Learn to Dive course is the first step in developing diving skills and gaining a recognised diver qualification that'll allow you to dive around the world. There are three parts to learning to dive; Theory where you learn the ‘why’ of scuba diving; Confined Water Dives introduce real skills learnt in a pool or similar environment; Open Water Dives where you apply and demonstrate the theory and skills you have learnt.
There are lots of Diver Training Systems and Learn to Dive courses the most popular, and widely recognised, is the PADI Open Water course, which takes around 5 days to complete. If that is too long try the shorter Scuba Diver course. These two form the entry level into the PADI system of diver training . Other diver training organisations and Clubs
Inline with Planet's philosophy of flexible holiday planning we offer a choice of alternatives to complete your course either entirely during your holiday or by doing some parts in the UK before you depart.
Newly Qualified Divers
Learning to Dive doesn't stop after a Learn to Dive course. On a Planet Dive holiday as a Newly Qualified Diver you can safely develop your diving skills with an advanced course. Rescue techniques and developing your ability to identify potential hazards are essential skills in ensuring your safety in the water.
Special Interest Diving
Whether you are newly certified or have hundreds of dives logged short Skill Development Courses can provide the perfect introduction to a variety of exciting diving experiences under the guidance of a qualified instructor.
Enhance your enjoyment of the underwater world and develop your knowledge of a special interest. Perhaps your interests lie in diving on ship wrecks? Diving at night? Drifting in the current? Why not dive with a computer? Learn underwater digital photography? Dive on Nitrox? You can learn to do all these and more. PADI's range of Speciality Courses are offered on many of our Land Based and Liveaboard holidays.
Taking it to a higher level choose an Escorted Workshop for a diving holiday in the company of a small group of like-minded buddies, escorted by experts in their field. Workshops including 'Wreck Exploration', 'Marine Awareness' and 'Photo' or 'Video' workshops as well as 'Technical' workshops for experienced divers venturing beyond simply scuba
Safety in the Water
On most of our Land Based holidays we offer the PADI Rescue Diver course during which you'll develop your overall competency and safety in the water up to a level required to dive safely without the support of a professional instructor-guide or in the company of less experienced divers. The Emergency First Response and Emergency Oxygen Provider Courses complement the Rescue Diver Course fully developing your safety skills.
To further develop your leadership skills you could consider becoming a Divemaster which, if you choose, is the first step towards becoming a recreational diving professional

Course Overview
Want to learn to dive but short on time or perhaps you don't want to devote too much holiday time to a course?

About Technical Diving
Technical Diving, also known as TEC diving or TECH Diving, goes beyond the conventional scope of recreational diving. This might be reflected in the dive profile as you may dive deeper or dive for longer, or dive in environments where standard scuba divers would not venture. Technical divers require advanced training and to develop their experience safely. They also require specialised equipment and often breathe breathing gases other than compressed air or standard nitrox mixes.
Recreational Technical Diving does not always require divers to have a great deal of diving experience.
Newly qualified divers, for example an Advanced Open Water diver, can take part in Technical Diving courses.
These courses are an easier step for the recreational diver:
Nitrox Diving – Oxygen Enriched Air is ideal for staying for longer at that ship-wreck, but is also used for added safety and less tiredness.
Rebreather Diving – fish and underwater life are not scared away when you have no bubbles, so you can get up closer with that camera
Sidemount Diving – having a tank on each side is a lot more stream-lined and comfortable, and the extra gas is ideal for photographers wanting to stay longer as well as those gas-guzzlers. Its also good for those with bad backs because the weight is distributed more evenly and you can easily put-on/take-off your gear in the water
Solo Diving – learn how to be self-reliant, perfect for those photographers who like to sit in one place for ages. It can also be combined with Sidemount Diving to give the extra gas!
For those who want to experience more exploration-type diving:
Advanced Nitrox and Decompression Diving – using open circuit or rebreathers, this type of diving takes you beyond the recreational limits to 55/60m
Trimix Diving – using open circuit or rebreathers, add an extra gas to go deeper still, beyond the 75m level
Wreck, Cave and Ice Diving – using open circuit or rebreathers, with or without trimix, diving in overhead environments where few have been before – a bit like exploring Mount Everest!

About Land Based Diving Holidays
Land based diving, aka Shorebased diving, staying in a hotel or lodge and diving from shore or a daily dive boat, can make for a very flexible form of diving holiday. Its often possible to extend the number of holiday nights and days diving, be slective about your choice of dives, build in time ashore with a non-diving partner or family or develop your diving skills by adding a dive course.
Planet's Land based diving holidays may be 'Dive Inclusive' so the prices you see include the standard diving available locally. The schedule and form this diving takes varies with destination or between dive operator. In the Caribbean the norm is for a 2 tank morning dive with an optional third afternoon dive. The Maldives tend to offer seperate morning and afternoon dives, allowing time back in the resort for lunch and a shower. A mix of shore dives and boat dives is the norm in Mabul, Sipadan, while for the Red Sea it is a whole day 2 or sometimes 3 tank trip, with lunch served onboard.
Within these general rules there is a whole heap of choice so in the dive holidays described in this web site we provide more detailed descriptions of the local diving, services provided by our dive operators and whether its possible to add a dive course. If you are not yet a qualified diver please refer to our Learn to Dive holidays or Contact Us if you are a mixed group of qualified and unqualified divers.
About Liveaboard Diving Holidays
One of the most popular diving holidays is to live on board a liveaboard dive boat exploring remote dive sites, often out of reach of a Land based diving holiday. Liveaboard diving enables qualified divers to max bottom-time in an informal, sociable atmosphere. Experienced guides select the best possible sites and provide expert dive briefings of the local diving while maintaining overall responsibility for diving safety & enjoyment. Waking each morning over the reefs you can dive as many of the scheduled dives as you like.
Dependent on the boat and holiday itinerary, 3-5 dives per day are possible. Where available Planet’s featured Liveaboards offer air-conditioned cabins with private facilities, shared with your cabin mate, with fresh sheets and towels provided. Between dives sun decks offer an opportunity to top up on some vitamin ‘D’. Food and drink are in ample supply and invariably there’s a comfortable salon for some well deserved après dive.
About Mini Liveaboard Diving Holidays
A Mini Liveaboard Safari is usually 3-4 days diving onboard combined with a few days Land based diving and hotel accommodation, aka Cruise & Stay, or as part of a touring dive holiday. Holiday itineraries vary between destination and boat. These itineraries are normally flexible as you might want to reverse the itinerary, add extra nights, take out the shorebased dives or add a holiday extension.
Many guests use the Mini Safaris as a taster when considering Liveaboard diving for the first time. Infact the mini safari experience can be quite different to that of a full blown liveaboard safari. It is equally suited to shorebased devotees wishing to access sites beyond the range of normal day boats, or to divers with non-diving partners who prefer to combine maximum dive time with chill-out time by a pool or evening entertainments ashore. The Mini Safari gives you this flexibility.
Underwater Photography
Skill Development Clinics in Underwater Photography are designed to help you develop your skills in underwater photography. Clinics are lead by expert, professional, dive guides who have specialist knowledge in getting that perfect shot underwater. They give presentations and provide coaching designed to help you develop your confidence and UW photo skills.
In the holidays listed below we offer escorted workshop style clinics or dive holidays with underwater photo tuition included:
About Wreck Diving Holidays
Storms and winds, dangerous currents and coral reefs conspire into a navigators nightmare and have been the downfall of shipping over the centuries. Add to these ships sunk in war and its easy to see why our sea beds are littered with Ship Wrecks of all classes, shapes and sizes.
Today many divers make the most of them whether it’s a historic wreck or purpose sunk artificial reef. Some destinations are known as wreck graveyards with a high density of wrecks like the Straits of
Gubal wrecks in
Egypt’s Red Sea, the ghost fleet of
Truk Lagoon or the Philippines
Coron Bay. In other destinations the wrecks are widely dispersed, like the
Maldives where there may be just one notable wreck per atoll. Then destinations create wrecks as artificial wrecks like the
Cayman Islands with its two fabulous wrecks.
Whether you are a die-hard ‘Wreckie’ or just fancy including some wreck diving to your diving holiday we have something to suit you.
