5 things to consider when planning a diving holiday

When you are thinking about planning a diving holiday there are a few things you need to consider before booking. This will make a huge difference between having a dive holiday of your dreams and ending up disappointed.

Here are our 5 things to consider before you book your holiday!

1. Pick your location

The location you choose for your holiday might be the most important factor to consider when planning your trip. Your location will be dependent on your certified dive level and how competent you are in the water.

Some locations such as Nusa Penida in Bali have very strong currents so being a strong swimmer is essential. Whereas, for the novice diver, a location like Mauritius where you can do shore dives safely might be a better option. The other main diving factors to think about when choosing your location will be the currents, visibility and water temperature.

2. What do you want to see?

There is an entire ocean full of life to explore, so when planning a trip it is important to know what it is you are wanting to see. Would you prefer to explore pretty coral reefs or wrecks?

Is it the joy of finding the tiniest ocean dwellers that attract you or coming across the large pelagic mammals and fish to swim alongside? Are you an avid photographer looking for the perfect environment to capture that is full of life? When there is so much to see it’s best to narrow it down in order to simplify your dive holiday!

3. Budget

Diving is a reasonably expensive sport in general, so if you are on a tighter budget it is a good idea to look for a good deal. Lots of dive destinations offer a range of accommodation styles, from affordable self-catering options to the luxurious all-inclusive resorts.

In Mauritius, you can get the best of both worlds by taking advantage of the St Regis Mauritius Resort’s incredible early bird specials and off-season deals. Enjoy luxury at a very reasonable price!

4. Time of year

Weather conditions vary greatly depending on where you are looking to dive. In places such as the Maldives the diving is great all year round, however, the season that you choose to travel in will determine what you see.

Other places such as Indonesia have a wet season which could affect the visibility, water temperature and the creatures you are likely to see. A good thing to remember is to not plan a dive holiday to a tropical destination during or immediately following their wet season.

5. Who is going along with you?

If you are a solo traveller just looking for your next great adventure then a liveaboard diving holiday is a great choice, however, for those travelling with friends and family there are a few things to consider.

If you are travelling with your family which includes young kids it is important to pick a place where there are plenty of non-diver activities. Many dive resorts cater for families and some, such as the Cocoon Resort in the Maldives, have amazing activities ranging from banana boats to a kids club to keep the children happy and entertained.
